The Lahore Resolution of 1940 vs. The Objectives Resolution 1949
Both the Lahore Resolution and The Objectives Resolution were important documents in the constitutional history of Pakistan. The Lahore Resolution came first and was adopted by the Muslim League. The Objectives Resolution came later in 1949 and was constructed under the leadership of Liaquat Ali Khan.
The All India Muslim League Resolution of March 1940, commonly known as the Pakistan Resolution changed the course of Indian history and led to the creation of Pakistan. The Muslims of the subcontinent changed their demand from “Separate Electorates” to a “Separate State.” This Resolution rejected the idea of a United India and the creation of an independent Muslim state. The resolution gave courage to the Muslims of the region who gathered around Quaid-i-Azam from the platform of the Muslim League to struggle for their freedom. The leadership of Quaid and the commitment and devotion of the followers made it possible for them to achieve an independent state within seven years of their struggle.
Objectives Resolution is one of the most important documents in the constitutional history of Pakistan. It was passed by the first Constituent Assembly on 12th March 1949 under the leadership of Liaquat Ali Khan. It presented the objectives on which the future constitution of the country was to be based and it proved to be the foundational stone of the constitutional development in Pakistan. The most significant thing was that it contained the basic principles of both Islamic political system and Western Democracy. Its importance can be established from the fact that it served as introduction for the constitution of 1956, 1962 and 1973 and ultimately became the part of the Constitution when the Eighth Amendment in the Constitution of 1973 was passed in 1985.
Objective Resolution was presented in the Constituent Assembly by Liaquat Ali Khan on March 7, 1949 and was debated for five days by the members from both the treasury and opposition benches. The resolution was ultimately passed on March 12.
In conclusion, both these documents were similar because they shared one objective: a new Pakistan. First their goal was to establish a separate state and then to form a proper constitution that the state would live by and would be built on. Without these two leaders and the help of our ancestors, we wouldn’t be where we are today and Pakistan wouldn’t be what is it today either.
